Stormwater ponds go by a number of names, ranging from detention ponds to bioretention devices, and dry ponds to wetlands. The NC Department of Environmental Quality lists all of these under the title of Stormwater Control Measure (SCM).
SCMs are designed to address water quantity and typically water quality issues related to stormwater runoff. Different counties, cities, and towns throughout the state have their own regulations regarding SCMs in their jurisdiction, however most require an annual inspection and maintenance to address any issues that may lead to the SCM not functioning properly.
